SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams announced that he has decided to veto rezoning plans for the Olympia Hills development near Herriman.

Mayor McAdams made the announcement at a press conference Friday morning at Salt Lake County Government Center.

Developers have proposed an 8,800-unit, high density housing project to an unincorporated area near 8500 West and 13100 South. It was expected to bring more than 30,000 residents to the area.

Hundreds filled Herriman High School Thursday night to voice their concerns about the development, saying they were not opposed to growth but wanted it better planned.

“The overwhelming message to me was that the density is too high, and the infrastructure is inadequate to accommodate the new residents,” the mayor said.

The Salt Lake County Council, which originally passed the zoning change, has 15 days to decide whether or not to override the veto.

“I’d like to thank all of the residents of Herriman, South Jordan, Riverton, West Jordan and other communities for being so engaged with the future of their cities and our community,” the mayor said.

Herriman Mayor David Watts was with Mayor McAdams for the announcement. He talked about the city’s long-term plan to annex the property, and said they would continue to work with the developer.
