Tooele Man’s Security Camera Captures Bizarre Incident In Road

Sep 26, 2018, 11:19 PM

TOOELE, Utah – A home security system captured video of a bizarre incident in Tooele on Tuesday.

Trip Kiss said he was in his front yard around noon Tuesday when he noticed a commotion in the intersection at 100 South 100 West. Video from a camera near his front door showed a truck pull around an SUV at a stop sign, then stop directly in front of the SUV. The truck driver left his vehicle, appeared to pull open the driver side door of the SUV and reach inside.

Kiss said he was already on the phone with Tooele police to talk about another incident when he saw what was happening.

“Woman screaming, man leaning into a vehicle, he’s got his arm on her and she’s yelling, ‘Give me my keys,’” Kiss said.

Kiss ran toward the vehicles and shouted at the man to get away. The man got back into his truck and pulled over to the shoulder of the road.

“I didn’t want to get physical with anybody. I just was hoping that a mere presence was going to stop it,” Kiss said. “He returned the keys after he understood that I was on the phone with the police and as quick as it started, it ended.”

Sergeant Jeremy Hansen of the Tooele Police Department said all the people involved were gone when they arrived. Hansen said they consider what happened to be a “suspicious incident,” but cannot say whether or not a crime occurred. If one of the people involved in the incident were to contact them, Hansen said they could gain more of an understanding of what exactly happened.

While they do not have a lot of information about what happened at the intersection Tuesday, Hansen said the increasing popularity of home security cameras is helping them solve more cases.

“It’s happening more and more often, even with burglaries, vehicle burglaries. When our detectives respond to those scenes, they’re not just looking at the house that’s involved,” Hansen said. They’re walking up and down the street canvassing the neighborhood, looking for cameras.”
