Layton Police Make Arrest Months After Man Caught On Baby Monitor Sneaking Into Home

LAYTON, Utah – Layton police arrested a man who they said sneaked into a family’s home and exposed himself in a bedroom where a mother and baby were sleeping. The incident was captured on a baby monitor mounted in the room.

Layton Police Lieutenant Travis Lyman said a man arrived home from his graveyard shift at work on May 13, and noticed lights that were usually on had been turned off. He said the man was suspicious and looked over video from a baby monitor in the master bedroom. That video, Lyman said, showed a man in the bedroom where a mother and baby were sleeping.

“He walks into the bedroom carefully and quietly, trying to make his way around in the bedroom and looks around at different things and then at one point comes over and stands next to the bed, right over the woman and exposes himself at one point as well,” Lyman said.

After a few minutes, Lyman said, the man left. In the days after the incident, police interviewed several people, but did not have much evidence pointing to who the man might be. Months later, though, they made an arrest.

Layton police arrested Jonathan Gonzalez, 28, Wednesday for investigation of burglary of a dwelling, lewdness involving a child, and lewdness.

Lyman said Gonzalez had been a friend of the couple and they talked to him early in the investigation, but had no evidence he was involved. After getting a warrant and searching Gonzalez’ phone, though, Lyman said they discovered digital location evidence that showed Gonzalez was at the scene when the incident happened.

“The victim in this case knew him and they had been friends previously and were acquaintances. That’s just another layer of what makes this such an alarming case is that it was somebody that they knew,” Lyman said. “Was familiar with the family’s schedule and that may have been why he felt as comfortable as he was to just go in there like that.”
