K-9 Officers Can Keep Their Jobs Under New Marijuana Law

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah’s new medical marijuana law won’t force drug-sniffing K-9 officers in the state out of their jobs.
Utah Rep. Paul Ray said a team went through the bill that replaced Proposition 2 and fixed language that allowed people to dodge searches by using medical cannabis cards.
“Under the old bill, they could shield themselves with the cards,” Ray said.
The way the law is written now, if a K-9 indicates marijuana is present, officers can then call in a narcotics strike force and search a car or someone’s home. Then, it’s up to the individual to prove they’re allowed to have the marijuana. If all they have is marijuana, they’re free to go. If they have other illegal drugs, they’ll get busted.
