ELK RIDGE, Utah – With freshly fallen snow on the ground and in the hills, Elk Ridge is beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
Inside the Haskell home is 6-year-old Nixon’s favorite room. After all, that is where he keeps his most prized possessions. Nixon has collected hundreds of tiny toy cars over the years. When you look around, It’s hard to believe just a few short months ago, the entire city, including the Haskell family were sent scrambling as wildfires closed in.
“We got evacuated,” Nixon said. “It was the night and there was so much fire, and we could see the flames.”
As Nixon’s mom grabbed irreplaceable and valuable family items, Nixon grabbed his.
The Haskell’s home was saved and Nixon returned to his beloved toy car race track. However, with the holidays right around the corner, the emotions are raw.
“I was reading about the Paradise Fire and it kind of hit close to home because we were in the same situation as them,” Ashlee Haskell, Nixon’s mom said.
She read about a California family just like their own, with a little boy just like Nixon.
“His whole entire house got burned and all his toy cars,” Nixon said.
Nixon decided to do something about it.
“He went down into that room and went through it all, and I think we got 50 to 60 (cars),” Ashlee Haskell said.
However, the little boy didn’t stop there.
“I had some money,” he explained.
“Yes, he used 13 of his own dollars,” Ashlee said.
With the money he had been saving, Nixon bought more cars, and this time not for himself.
“I wanted to make (the California boy) feel better,” Nixon said.
On Monday, the Haskells made a very special trip to the post office with packages postmarked for California from one car-loving boy to another.
“There are still so many people in need over there,” Ashlee said.
This year the Haskells are counting their blessings.
“It could have been us,” she said. “It definitely could have been us.”
They will be spending Christmas together in their home that escaped the flames and thanks to a sweet 6-year-old little boy, they’re remembering.
