WEST JORDAN, Utah – Gov. Gary Herbert on Wednesday signed several new education bills at the groundbreaking of one of the new elementary schools being built in the Jordan School District.
The ceremonial signing took place at 8860 S. 6400 West, one of five sites where new schools will be erected to help alleviate overcrowding.
“To our young people here, are you listening?” Herbert asked. “… You are the leaders of tomorrow. We are looking to you — we expect you — to succeed, to be good, to be great.”
The governor added his signature to five bills that were passed during the 2019 legislative session, which included a computer science for every classroom bill, a school safety bill, and a bill to challenge special needs students, just to name a few.
The official groundbreaking followed the signing, and local parents said they are thrilled about the new school.
“We have been concerned with the number of kids in our elementary schools,” said resident Melissa Hiller. “This is exciting that they finally announced, not too long ago, that we are getting a new elementary school.”

“It’s very close to our house, and it will help alleviate some of the stresses to me,” she added.
The new school will have room for 950 students, but they anticipate opening with about 800 for the first couple of years.
The school will educate students K-6 and will open by 2021.
