Trooper: Suspected DUI Driver Clocked At 104 MPH

Oct 7, 2019, 10:31 PM

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah — A man was arrested after Utah Highway Patrol troopers said he was driving under the influence at over 100 mph.

UHP Sergeant David Moreno said he was monitoring I-215 traffic in Taylorsville when he caught a truck on radar traveling 104 mph Sunday.

He initiated a traffic stop and immediately caught a smell coming from the vehicle.

“I was just greeted with this overwhelming odor of alcohol just coming from the vehicle and then I could see an 18-pack of beers in the back,” Moreno said Monday. “It was just a combination of speed and alcohol mixed together. I knew then it was dangerous.”

Troopers initiated a DUI investigation and field tests showed the man with a blood alcohol level of 0.176, which is more than three times the legal limit.

Officials said 35-year-old Skylar Tyson Seabrook was arrested on suspicion of DUI, speeding and being an alcohol restricted driver.

Court records showed Seabrook had pleaded guilty in three prior DUI cases, with the last coming in 2009.

“The reason I was there was because last week we had a fatality right there,” Moreno said. “We had a female that had just died — a single vehicle into a wall — so I just wanted to be there this week so I could just follow-up and make sure people slow down when they saw me.”

Moreno said he was glad to be in the right place at the right time to make a stop and arrest.

“At that moment, I was just so thankful I was able to stop him before he killed someone on a Sunday morning,” he said.
