Thursday Storm Hits Valleys With Rain; Snow Anticipated In Days To Come

BOX ELDER COUNTY, Utah – The beginning of a three-day storm Thursday picked up late in the morning with plenty of rain and even some snow in higher elevations.

Sardine Canyon as well as roads leading to ski resorts were already getting enough snow to warrant plows.

Officials with the Utah Department of Transportation said they have plows at the ready to stay ahead of the storm. They want to remind drivers to slow down during inclement weather, though.

“What we need drivers to keep in mind is those mountain passes,” said UDOT spokesman Zach Whitney. “Even though we’re trying our very hardest, the intensity of that storm is sometimes a little more than even plows can keep up with. So we need drivers to be aware, particularly in the canyons – like Sardine and the Cottonwoods – where we have traction law restrictions that can go into place.”

As always, drivers are asked to keep a generous driving distance behind vehicles in front of them, and never pass a snow plow.

KSL meteorologist Grant Weyman said temperatures will drop slightly Friday, turning some of the rain to snow.

Commuters should prepare for wet road conditions in the valleys as rain continues for most of the Wasatch Front. Some parts of Utah County could see some snow Friday morning, as will areas north of Salt Lake, including Davis, Weber and Box Elder counties.
