Utah Man Says Work Trailer, Tools Stolen From Sugar House Job Site

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – One Utahn is asking for help after he said someone stole a trailer containing all of his work tools less than two weeks before Christmas.

Brett Lytle said the theft took place sometime between 8:30 p.m. Thursday and 8:30 a.m. Friday at a job site in a residential area near 1900 South and 900 East.

Despite being nearby a busy road, no witnesses had come forward with any information.

“It was just gone,” he said. “The cops think (whoever stole it) tied it to their truck and dragged it down the street.”

For five years, Lytle has been running his own small construction company.

“We finally felt like we were making it,” he said.

Lytle said he thought the trailer was secure with extra locks and he usually never leaves the trailer behind.

“Life has a way of keeping you humble,” he said.

Lytle said that because the trailer wasn’t hitched to his truck, car insurance won’t cover it and because it was on the street, homeowner’s insurance won’t cover the loss either.

Without the tools, Lytle said he has no way to finish the current remodel or any future jobs.

“(I feel everything) from devastation, the anger to wondering what I am going to do?” he said.

At home, he has two young children and a wife with serious health issues.

“I lost the ability to work before Christmas and I have to pay our normal living expenses plus about $2,300 to health insurance by the 12th of January,” Lytle said.

Now, he’s pleading with whoever stole his trailer to do the right thing.

“I’ve got to be the bigger person here and hope that they just needed it more than we did,” he said.

Lytle said he just wants to get back to work as soon as possible.

“How do I keep it all together? How am I going to keep the lights on, food on the table and pay for medical bills,” he asked.

If you’d like to help out the Lytle family and donate some tools, a GoFundMe* account has been established.

The trailer Brett Lytle said was stolen from a worksite near 1900 South and 900 East Thursday night.
