Police Urge ‘Extreme Caution’ Amid Cottonwood Heights Cougar Sightings

COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS, Utah – Police warned residents to exercise “extreme caution” around woodland interface areas amid a handful of recent cougar sightings around the city, including one at a park that was some distance from the east bench.

“Be really cautious of your surroundings, don’t go hiking by yourself,” said Sergeant Jeremy Nelson with the Cottonwood Heights Police Department. “Make sure pets are attended at all times, that they’re not running loose or left outside overnight where they could be attacked.”

People out hiking and walking their dogs were already aware Monday afternoon of the latest sighting at Crestwood Park, located at 1673 East Siesta Drive.

“I debated if we should go or not, but she needed a walk,” Kathy Roberts said of her dog.

Utah Division of Wildlife Resources spokesperson Faith Jolley said multiple cougars were believed to be hunting in the Cottonwood Heights area.

She said officers on Saturday tranquilized and removed a mountain lion after it had killed a deer and buried it in a backyard.

Another animal that killed a bobcat and raccoon hadn’t been seen since Dec. 23.

“It’s kind of alarming to have that many sightings in such a short period of time,” Nelson said.

If people encounter a cougar, DWR recommendations instruct them not to run.

Instead, wildlife officers advise people maintain eye contact, attempt to look larger by extending arms and addressing the animal loudly and firmly.

Police said anyone in the city who sees a mountain lion should call dispatch at 801-743-7000.
