State: Power Outages, Falling Trees & Flying Trampolines Possible During High-Wind Event

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Officials with the Utah Department of Emergency Management said northern Utah residents should secure any loose items — including trampolines — as high winds move into the state.

Sustained winds were expected to hit the northern Wasatch Front at 25-35 mph, but gusts could reach 75+ mph in areas, especially near Centerville and canyons in Davis County.

State officials said during a similar event in 2011, “staff members driving through Davis County spotted trampolines in trees, wrapped around fences, tossed in streets and into other yards.”

Secure/dismantle/bring in ANYTHING the wind can carry (garbage can/etc.) if you want it back.

Emergency officials also said trees — young and old — can fall during high wind gusts and cause damage.

They urged residents to charge their phones Monday night in case trees knock down power lines and cause outages.

“Please don’t call 911 to report a power outage,” officials added. “Please don’t call 911 to report the wind storm.”

State officials said too many people did those two things in 2011.

They also said Utah will make it through this event.

“Hey, it’s 2020,” officials said in a tweet. “We have dealt with the pandemic, earthquakes, wildfires and floods. It will pass. And we’ll take steps to be even more prepared next time.”
