Washington Terrace Asking For Help With Overwhelming Windstorm Cleanup

WASHINGTON TERRACE, Utah – Washington Terrace is among communities hit hard by Tuesday’s windstorm, and Mayor Mark Allen is asking surrounding communities for help with the big cleanup this weekend.

Allen said he hopes people can see the damage for themselves, drive around and see how they can help.

Some homeowners may simply need help hauling away the waste.

Utah has seen it before — neighbors helping neighbors in the wake of a disaster.

Josh Atwood said he couldn’t imagine cleaning up what was a towering pine tree without help.

“Quite a big difference. Pretty slow at first, because it was just a few of us, just me and my family, but once everybody showed up yesterday, it went pretty fast with a lot of people,” he said.

Dan and Linda Fonnesbeck answered the call to help. They couldn’t let their neighbors push through this alone.

“It’s overwhelming. It’s totally overwhelming. You look at it and you realize how much damage there is around. It can be really overwhelming,” Linda Fonnesbeck said.

Washington Terrace city leaders reached out to entire nearby communities to do the same.

“As you go through the city and look at the different piles, there are a lot of people who could use some help,” said Tom Hanson, city manager.

He was relieved to see other communities are already responding.

“Roy city is coming out to help us out with their teams,” Hanson said. “Now that they’ve got their city under control, they’re actually sending their resources to us.”

Now. Washington Terrance is asking everyday citizens to do the same. In some ways, it’s already happening.

“I think it’s a good thing. My aunt and uncle are here from Sunset, and we had some people show up from Riverdale that helped take down a downed tree. We had people show up from Roy,” Don Fonnesbeck said.

Residents are counting on a good turnout for a big cleanup Saturday.

“People make a big difference when they take a little bit of time to help,” Linda Fonnesbeck added.

Washington Terrace homeowners can drop their green waste at the public works building throughout the next couple of weeks.

Ogden city’s green waste site is also taking loads from neighboring communities during that same time.
