CEDAR CITY, Utah – A suspect is in the hospital after police shot him during a chase, authorities said.
The incident happened at approximately 8 p.m. Sunday in Iron County.
According to the Iron/Beaver/Garfield Counties Critical Incident Task Force, Cedar City police responded to a call of an assault in progress after a man with a knife allegedly attacked another man.
Before officers arrived at the scene, the suspect fled in a vehicle.
The man was later identified as Larry Joseph Lee Tessier, 36.
“The suspect drove recklessly on the roadways and was a danger to the public,” according to a statement from the incident task force.
Authorities spiked Tessier’s tires, but he continued to flee. Officers also attempted multiple pursuit intervention techniques, but the suspect’s vehicle was not disabled.
“Preliminary investigation suggests Tessier’s vehicle made contact with a law enforcement vehicle as he attempted to again flee,” officials said in a statement. “At some point during this engagement, law enforcement officers discharged their weapons.”
Tessier was struck several times, and officers at the scene initiated life-saving measures. The suspect was transported to the Cedar City Hospital and was later transported by helicopter to the St. George Regional Hospital where he is in critical condition.
The investigation is ongoing.
