SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Salt Lake City School District has selected a Minnesota educator as its new superintendent.
The board voted unanimously to select Timothy Gadson III. He will start a two-year contract in July.
“We had the opportunity to interview three great finalists last week, but Dr. Gadson stood out for his focus on putting students first,” board president Melissa Ford said in a statement. “In a district with so much diversity, robust academic programming, and a wide variety of student needs, we need a leader who will keep the focus where it needs to be: on our students.”
Gadson has served as an assistant principal and principal in elementary, middle and high schools, according to a brief biography released by the Salt Lake City School District. He also worked as a director of secondary education, a chief transformation officer, an associate superintendent and as the executive director of curriculum and schools.\
He is currently the associate superintendent of high schools with Anoka-Hennepin Schools in Anoka, Minnesota.
The Utah School Superintendent Association says it believes Gadson is the first Black educator to lead a Utah school district.
District officials began the search for a new superintendent following the resignation of Lexi Cunningham in January 2020.
Larry Madden has held the job on an interim basis since last year. He says he plans to retire later this year.
