SALT LAKE CITY — Gov. Spencer Cox has invited all Utahns to join him in praying for rain to relieve the state from current drought conditions.

Cox issued the declaration Thursday and has previously issued two drought emergency orders.

“I’ve already asked all Utahns to conserve water by avoiding long showers, fixing leaky faucets, and planting water-wise landscapes. But I fear those efforts alone won’t be enough to protect us,” Cox said. “We need more rain and we need it now. We need some divine intervention. That’s why I’m asking Utahns of all faiths to join me in a weekend of prayer June fourth through the sixth.”

Over 90% of the state is experiencing extreme drought and over 62% is in exceptional drought — the most severe level listed by the U.S. Drought Monitor.

The governor’s declaration said Utah’s snowpack peaked 10 days early and reached approximately 81% of normal, while spring runoff is forecasted to 76% of the state’s seasonal average.

Officials added current soil moisture is also at the lowest levels since monitoring began in 2006.
