SOUTH JORDAN, Utah – Two students from Mountain Creek Middle School were selected to march in the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, California, on New Year’s Day.

The teens will march with the Bands of America Honor Band.

Mountain Creek Middle School is part of a national program called United Sound, a program that pairs neuro-diverse students with their typical-learning peers as mentors.

Jaymi Bonner and Emma Figueroa are part of that program. Jaymi plays the violin and Emma plays the trumpet.

With student mentors coaching them, the girls have thrived and are thrilled to take part in what’s being called a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“I think these kids are just like, so amazing and they definitely deserve the opportunity to meet new people and be in programs like this,” said Christopher Seale, one of the sound mentors at Herriman High School.

Jaymi’s mother said her daughter is excited for the parade.

“Every day she talks about it,” Jeanna Bonner said. “Every day, (she) tells everyone she knows that she’s playing her violin in the parade.”

Emma Figueroa shared the same feelings. “I’m really excited, but nervous,” she told KSL.

The school is asking for some help. Emma is playing the trumpet but only has use of one hand, so she will ride in a wheelchair for the parade. She needs something that will help keep the trumpet stable while she rides.

Contact the band teacher at Mountain Creek Middle School if you can help.

This year, the No. 11 University of Utah Utes will take on the No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes in the Rose Bowl Game on New Year’s Day.
