Ogden teacher to retire after 61 years in the classroom

Dec 9, 2021, 2:46 PM | Updated: 3:37 pm

OGDEN—Dozens gathered Wednesday evening to say their goodbyes to a well-loved teacher who is retiring after 61 years in the Ogden School District.

Alice Glenn, who seemed insistent on not sharing her age, began in the district in August of 1960.

“I started out in 3rd Grade at Grant Elementary School in Ogden and I had a class of 28 3rd graders,” Glenn recalled in an interview with KSL 5. “That was a special time in my life.”

Over the years, Glenn has taught at Grant, Dee Elementary School—which entirely came and went during her tenure—and now Wasatch Elementary, where she teaches 2nd Grade students.

“It’s totally different then as to now,” Glenn smiled.

In addition to the curriculum, Glenn spends time daily training her students on the finer points of accountability and respect—respecting their learning environment, themselves, their families and others around them no matter their differences.

“Respect has pretty much gone down a lot,” she said. “That’s something I have to work on, on a daily basis.”

Wednesday, however was about paying respect to the teacher, herself.

After more than 6 decades influencing lives as students have passed through her classroom, Glenn was being recognized as she prepared to retire at the end of the semester.

“Just think of the thousands upon thousands and thousands of students that you’ve impacted over your career,” said Ogden School District superintendent Luke Rasmussen as he presented Glenn with a plaque. “We’re just so excited that you made this decision and we’re happy for you and we hope that you keep coming back and volunteering and you’re still involved in our schools and you continue to impact kids and we just appreciate you for everything that you’ve done, so thank you so much.”

Dozens of current and former students and their parents as well as current and former colleagues turned out to wish Glenn well as she headed into retirement.

Glenn said she loved the kids and her faculty and making a difference.

“I just want to see all of them and hug them, I want to be with them,” Glenn said. “It’s just so touching the love that comes through them and evidently they must feel my love too because I would do anything for them.”
