Witness describes the moment he saw Salt Lake City carjacking

SALT LAKE CITY — A witness to the carjacking in Salt Lake City Saturday night shared his story with KSL.

Andrew Wyatt was talking to coworkers in a parking lot when they heard a gunshot. They looked up to the bridge nearby and saw a man with a gun.

“As he was walking down the highway, you could clearly see the gun,” Wyatt said. “He stood in front of the car gun point through the windshield about 10 seconds.”

Wyatt took his phone out and started recording as soon as the victims got out of the car and put their hands up and started running. He says the suspect got in the car but then quickly got back out and chased after the victims, pointing his gun at them.

Wyatt was surprised when suddenly the suspect got back out of the car and chased the two victims.

“It was wild, kind of surreal, and it was freaky because we didn’t know if we were going to watch these kids get shot,” he said.

In the video, you can see the victim in the black shirt stop.

“And he drops something right here — I’m guessing the keys — and he was at gunpoint when he first started running, grabs whatever he needs,” Wyatt said.

The person in the black shirt still running down the freeway.

“Three hundred yards away, I mean, I could feel their fear,” Wyatt said.

Wyatt watched as the suspect sped off.

Soon after, he heard the news that the suspect was shot and killed during a confrontation with police.

“It didn’t surprise me, honestly. I mean, anyone who is willing to stand out in the middle of the daylight, shoot a gun on a freeway and take that car the way he did doesn’t really plan on going down easily,” Wyatt said.

Salt Lake City police have not given an update as of Sunday afternoon, and we do not know the suspect’s name.

Investigators say Monday will be the earliest they’ll release new information.
