SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Agriculture said it has seen an alarming increase in the number of reported missing and killed livestock over the last few years.
So far this year, the UDAF has investigated 77 reports of missing cattle, five reports of missing horses and mules, and one sheep. Seven of those animals were recovered.
Another seven livestock were killed under suspicious circumstances.
“Our department has been investigating a substantial amount of cases of missing livestock and suspicious livestock deaths this year,” said Leann Hunting, UDAF animal industry director. “While we don’t know the exact cause of the increase in cases, it is very concerning and we want to raise awareness of these happenings.”
Monday the Juab County Sheriff’s Department offered a $20,000 reward for information on the killing of three cows in the Levan and Mills area.
A similar reward is available for tips that lead to an arrest in any case of a missing or mutilated animal.
