SOUTH OGDEN, Utah — A man is facing assault charges after allegedly hitting a car multiple times, getting naked, and fighting bystanders.
According to arresting documents, Shawn Smith, 32, rammed into a woman’s car on 850 E., 5300 South at approximately 8:45 p.m. Monday.
The woman told South Ogden police that she was making a left-hand turn when Smith rear-ended her. She attempted to pull forward, but he hit her car again, causing her car on the sidewalk.
Smith rammed the woman’s car five times, pushing it on the grass, over a light pole, and against a brick wall. The two got out of their cars, and the woman asked Smith why he hit her. He replied, “he knows why,” according to the documents.
Two men came over to check on the crash when Smith took off all his clothes. Smith noticed another woman riding her bike, ran to her, pulled her off the bike, and said, “Give me your (expletive).”
The bystanders from the car crash attempted to stop Smith and he began to punch them. Another male driver noticed the fight, got out of his car, and tackled Smith to the ground, where the bystanders held him until South Ogden police arrived.
According to arresting documents, Smith was transported to a local hospital for a medical evaluation, where he spoke to an officer after being informed of and understanding his Miranda Rights.
Smith said he intentionally rammed his car into the woman’s car multiple times and intended to harm whoever was in it. He also wanted to take the bike from the other woman.
He said he got naked because “the music wasn’t working, so he wanted to try something else.” Smith also started punching bystanders because “nothing else was working.”
The officer asked if Smith was on any drugs, he said he had used THC oil earlier that day. He also stated that he was diagnosed with bipolar syndrome and hasn’t taken his medications in six months to a year.
During the police interview, the officer noted that Smith was “calm and appeared to be of sound mind.”
He told the officer that he did not know any of the victims or bystanders. Smith is facing charges of two counts of assault, aggravated assault, lewdness, and robbery.
