Officials reminding Utahns to stay safe and expect crowds this Labor Day

Sep 5, 2022, 9:10 AM

SALT LAKE CITY — Whether out on the water, on the road or spending time in the mountains this Labor Day, public safety leaders are reminding Utahns to be prepared for crowds.

The Utah County Sheriff’s Office has some simple tips to help keep your celebrations fun and safe.

“We will undoubtedly get some calls. We never know how much that’s going to happen until it starts happening,” said Sgt. Spencer Cannon, spokesperson for Utah County Sheriff’s Office.

If you’re boating, Cannon says to make sure everyone has a life jacket. And remember — boating and alcohol don’t mix.

With scorching temperatures, it’s important to hydrate.

Those of you spending time in the mountains, take plenty of water on that hike and pack extra snacks.

Wear the right shoes and take sunscreen with you. Also, make sure you tell someone where you plan on going.

“Mount Timpanogos, for example, one of the problems we see there is people leave early in the morning or maybe around midnight and they’ll tell families they’ll be back at noon,” Cannon said. “It almost always takes longer than they anticipate.”

American Fork Canyon is going to be extremely busy Monday, so plan ahead. Get there early as parking spots fill up quickly. Make sure you park in designated areas because you will be ticketed if you don’t.

Cannon also reminded drivers to slow down on the road.

On this Labor Day, public safety leaders are bringing on additional staff. They want to make sure people are obeying the rules of the road and buckling up.
