SALT LAKE CITY — A 29-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly assaulted his roommate and then barricaded himself inside his Salt Lake City home.

According to a press release from the Salt Lake City Police Department, Nicolas Waitkevich, 29, who was identified as the suspect in the case, will be booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail for domestic violence aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, domestic violence in the presence of a child, and obstruction.

The investigation began at approximately 7:45 a.m. when SLC911 got a call about a domestic violence assault at a home near 1100 E. Zenith Avenue.

When officers arrived, they surrounded the home and tried talking with the people inside.

“During the investigation, officers learned everyone inside the home knew each other,” the release stated.

Eventually, police said a 38-year-old man came out of the home and told officers Waitkevich had assaulted him.

The man was then taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

After that, officers continued to try to diffuse the situation and get everyone to peacefully surrender.

Out of an abundance of caution, a shelter in place was ordered for people in the nearby area.

“The Salt Lake City Fire Department and a Gold Cross Ambulance staged as a precaution,” the release stated.

SLCPD SWAT and crisis negotiators were then called out to the scene.

After a search warrant was approved, members of the SWAT team safely entered the home and took Waitkevitch into custody.

“Officers found two other people in the home and their involvement is still being figured out,” the release stated.

Police said Waitkevitch and the two other people inside the home did not have injuries.
