LOGAN, Utah — Three people sustained minor injuries Saturday after three separate vehicles went into the Logan River.

The first incident happened at approximately 7:30 a.m. near mile post 474. Sgt. Cade Brenchley with the Utah Highway Patrol said a 20-year-old man was headed up the canyon to go skiing when he took a curve too fast and rolled his vehicle down a 20-foot embankment. The vehicle ended up on its side in the river, but the man only sustained a cut to his hand.

The second incident happened approximately 30 minutes later and about half a mile south of the first crash. Fortunately, this vehicle did not roll and the occupants did not sustain any injuries, according to UHP Sgt. Peterson.

“This morning, there was some icy conditions. The conditions were actually good up until you got to about milepost 471/472, and then it was noticeably different, and conditions were slick, especially around the curves. There were a lot of people that made it OK that were going slow enough, but those who were going too fast didn’t make it — they slid off,” Brenchley said.

The third crash occurred just before noon. Peterson told KSL a mother and daughter were traveling southbound when they lost control near mile post 478. The vehicle crossed the center line and rolled down an embankment, ending upside down in the river. Luckily, the two occupants only sustained minor injuries.

“That is one thing people need to realize about any canyon, but especially Logan Canyon, is you can have a spot that’s just fine — it’s a little wet and there’s no ice — and then you might go a mile up the road where the canyon narrows a little bit and you get a little bit of wind tunnel and the wind’s a little cold and it’ll ice it over,” Brenchley said.
