Locket full of mother's ashes stolen Sunday
SALT LAKE CITY – Thieves broke into several cars in a Liberty Park neighborhood in the 400 East block of 1300 South taking something that means everything to the woman who lost it.
Megan Carter said she always locks her car, because she knows thieves are on the prowl in her neighborhood. Around 5 a.m. Sunday, they stole a small silver locket from her car, and she’s desperate to get it back.
“No broken windows,” Carter said.
She believes the crooks knew what they were looking for and how to take it. Her neighbors woke her up after noticing someone breaking into their cars.
“They noticed all of our car doors were open,” Carter said.
She quickly looked inside to find the locket.
“That was the only thing that was missing,” said Carter.
She hung the locket from her rearview mirror a year ago, after her mother, Beckie, passed away following a long battle with cancer that started in 2006.
“She was my best friend,” Carter said. “She was amazing. We did everything together.”
The family spread Beckie’s ashes at a favorite spot in Arizona and kept several small lockets of ashes to keep her memory close.
“I hung it on my rearview mirror, because I wanted her to go and travel with me wherever I went,” Carter said.
Before her mother died, they cherished their moments together. They traveled to Hawaii in the weeks before she died last February, and they ran a 5K race because it was on her mother’s bucket list.
“Her life was an adventure,” Carter said.
Carter knows getting the locket back is a long shot.
“The only think that has no value to anybody else means the entire world to me,” she said.
Carter is hopeful that whoever took the locket sees this report and understands how valuable it is to her.
“Bring it back,” she asks. “There’s no reason for someone to have another love one’s remains. I’ll give you anything you want. Just bring back my mom.”
Anyone with information on the stolen locket is asked to call Salt Lake City police at 801-799-3000.
