SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Body cam video has been released for the first time from an officer-involved shooting that left 30-year-old Cody Paris Belgard dead.
The shooting took place Nov. 9 following a high-speed chase that ended on Sir Phillip Drive.
Authorities released the footage during a press conference Wednesday.
In the footage, Belgard ignores commands to “get on the ground.” Officers can be heard saying, “he’s got a gun,” and “he’s pointing.” Five officers fired their guns during the incident. Four of those shots hit and killed Belgard.
However, police on Wednesday said no weapon was found at the scene.
Belgard’s family was present during the press conference, and they requested the body cam footage of every officer present during the incident.
About 45 minutes prior to the shooting, Salt Lake City Police Department officers located Belgard and a woman behind the wheel of a car that had fled from authorities about a week prior. When police made contact with them, only the woman complied.
In the body cam footage, the woman can be seen exiting the vehicle. Belgard then moves to the driver’s side and flees in the car, nearly hitting police officers as he does.
That led to the high-speed chase, which ended when Belgard exited the vehicle and was shot.
Belgard’s family said they want justice.
“A lot of footage that we viewed yesterday, that was not here,” said Belgard’s brother, Marvin Oliveros. “Even the footage we saw here, everybody saw his back turned. … What we did see was his back turned, and multiple officers said: ‘He’s pointing. He has a gun.'”
“All of those officers can attest to not finding a weapon of any kind on him,” he added.
The ongoing investigation is being conducted by the West Valley Police Department and the District Attorney’s Office.
