SPANISH FORK, Utah – A fire in Spanish Fork destroyed a home and killed several animals, authorities said.
According to the Spanish Fork Police Department, a homeowner returned to her house at 789 S. 1240 East Thursday morning to find smoke inside the home. She then went to the back of the house where she opened a door and saw flames.
When fire crews arrived, approximately 9 minutes after being called, they found the home fully engulfed in flames.
“It was a defensive attack,” SFPD Lt. Brandon Anderson said.
There were reportedly one and four rats in a cage found in the basement of the house. All had died from smoke inhalation. A second cat was unaccounted for.
“The house is a total loss, it appears,” Anderson said.
Authorities said damage is estimated at more than $300,000. No humans were in the home at the time.
Mapleton City Fire Department and Salem City Fire Department also responded to the incident. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
