Authorities Identify Man Who Died Near Bridal Veil Falls

PROVO CANYON, Utah — Authorities have identified a man who died Sunday when debris fell on him in Provo Canyon.
Fernando Alderete Salazar, 25, was visiting from Mexico for a family event at the time of his death, Utah County Sheriff’s Sgt. Spencer Cannon said Tuesday. Officials previously said the man killed was 23.

“He was a good kid. He was a soccer fan of Cruz Azul and he will even be wearing a team shirt in his funeral. He was going to graduate college and become an accountant. He always helped his family out and all his friends and family loved him,” Salazar’s family said in a statement via the Utah County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday.
Officials say a large tree or rock injured him about 3 p.m. Sunday near Bridal Veil Falls. People nearby tried to revive him, but Alderete Salazar died at the scene. The Bridal Veil Falls trail was closed for several hours while authorities responded to the incident.
Alderete Salazar’s family is working with the Mexican Consulate to return his body back to Mexico, Cannon said.
