Utah Lawmaker Trying Again For ‘Red Flag’ Law

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The two most recent mass shootings — one in El Paso, Texas, and one in Dayton, Ohio — have renewed calls for action across the country.
In Utah, several groups are uniting to get their messages to the state’s senators. The Gun Violence Prevention Center, March for our Lives, Moms Demand Action, and The Alliance for a Better Utah all want lawmakers to establish preventative measures to keep more shootings from happening and ensure the past tragedies are never forgotten.
Rep. Steve Handy, of Layton, is listening.
Handy has re-filed a bill for the upcoming 2020 legislative session that would help get guns away from someone who’s threatening to harm themselves or others.
He’s tried for the past two years to pass a “red flag” law. Such a law would allow a family member to seek an official order. A judge would then call for firearms to be removed and refer the person for mental health treatment.
