Lake Mountain Middle School Could Open After Fire Marshal Inspection

Sep 16, 2019, 6:02 AM | Updated: 1:13 pm

SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah – Lake Mountain Middle School is one step closer to opening its doors to student’s after an inspection Monday with the Utah State Fire Marshal.

As of noon there, was still no definite answer, but Hogan Construction and the Fire Marshal’s office are working together to hopefully open the doors by Wednesday.

“I feel really good about what I’ve seen, so I’m very positive,” said Ted Black, chief deputy for the Utah State Fire Marshal’s office. “I can’t give you a for sure just yet.”

Black said it’s looking promising for the portion of the school that will open up to students, staff and faculty.

“When it opens, we’re still going to have no auditorium, no technology hall, no band rooms, no arts,” said Amy Wixom, whose children will be attending the new middle school. “That whole half of the school will still be under construction until Christmas, they’re saying.”

Wixom is anxious to get her seventh- and ninth-grade kids back in the classroom. Her boys are ready, too, after weeks of online learning.

“I like doing the homeschool because it’s easier,” Colter Wixom said. “You can get it done fast and hang out with friends, but I’m also ready to go back for the social side of school.”

If all safety requirements are met, Colter and his brother won’t have to wait much longer.

“Our goal is the safety of the children and staff, obviously,” Black said. “Wee are not going to let the building open without that assurance that they’re going to be safe.”

Safety measures include a hard inspection of a number of things from the sprinkling systems, alarms systems, a chemical system in the kitchen and exiting in the event of an emergency.

It’s a safety check for which Wixom is grateful.

“We’re excited to get back in, but glad actually for the extra week, even though that sounds a little crazy,” she said. “But it wasn’t ready last week, and I was not feeling good about it last week.”

Once the doors are open, Hogan Construction will continue do work on the portion of the school that is not finished.
