TOOELE, Utah – A man on Tuesday stole a car with a 10-year-old boy inside from a driveway in Tooele, authorities said.
The boy is home safe with his family, but police are still looking for the perpetrator.
The incident began at approximately 7:30 a.m. in the area of 1900 North and Berra Boulevard.
Guy Ashdown said his wife had just left the vehicle to call for the couple’s daughter when a man jumped into the driver’s seat of the Dodge Magnum and took off. The alleged thief drove about half a block before ordering the child to get out of the vehicle, officials said.
He said his son was “shook up” after finding himself riding next to a strange man. Visibly emotional, Ashdown said the man threatened his son and told him to get out of the car “or else he was gonna do something.”
The child’s mother made a frantic 911 call reporting the car stolen, and the Utah Highway Patrol soon located the vehicle on Interstate 80. Troopers followed it to an apartment complex near 8400 West and 2900 South in Magna where the alleged carjacker exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

“Some of the clothing he was wearing was found inside the vehicle, so we no longer have an accurate clothing description for him,” said Tooele City Police Sgt. Jeremy Hansen.
He said the alleged thief is not a relative or a friend.
Ashdown, however, said he knows the identity of the culprit. He said he knows he frequents a house in the neighborhood.
“I want to put my hands around his throat, and I want to make him scared,” Ashdown said.
Police said there is no threat to the community.
