NEW HARMONY, Utah — Officials with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office have identified a man who they said was killed when an explosive device detonated in a garage Saturday evening.
Police identified the man Monday as 25-year-old Jordan Rinehart of New Harmony, Utah, which is around 40 miles north of St. George.
Members of the Washington County Bomb Squad cleared the residence and said no additional explosive devices were found and there was no further threat to the public.
Police said a witness and Rinehart went to care for some horses on the farm property and Rinehart asked the witness to come to the garage area after they completed their work.
The witness told investigators Rinehart said he was making an explosive device.
Police said the witness then turned to walk away when the device detonated, killing Rinehart. The witness was not injured and was cooperating with investigators.
The deceased individual was previously known to law enforcement and detectives said no evidence had been discovered to indicate an intended target for the device.
