LIVE UPDATES: Snow, Ice Creating Issues During Morning Commute

10 a.m.
Snowbird Ski Resort is closed due to winds and heavy snowfall. The resort says it will reevaluate opening at noon.
Storm intensity continues to remain strong with high winds and heavy snowfall. At this time, the resort will remain closed and we will re-evaluate at 12pm.

Crashes are being reported in Utah, Juab, Weber and Salt Lake counties, mostly along I-15.
9:45 a.m.
UDOT has closed SR-210 in Little Cottonwood Canyon to public and to essential pass holders for ongoing avalanche control work. There is no word on when the road will reopen.
In Big Cottonwood Canyon, UDOT is reporting conditions are snowy and windy: “Be prepared for slow going traffic and possible parking congestion.”

KSL meteorologist Grant Weyman says temperatures will heat up a bit around noon, turning the snow into rain for some areas of the valleys.

9:30 a.m.
Traffic across most of the Wasatch Front has improved slightly. However, congestion remained heavy on both north and southbound I-15 from Lehi through Lindon.
9 a.m.
Crashes continue to stack up along the Wasatch Front: northbound I-15 at Main Street in Lehi, northbound I-215 East at 6200 South in Holladay, and on SR 132 at mile post 38 in Juab County.
UDOT Avalanche is reporting a back country closure in Little Cottonwood Canyon from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

UDOT reporting SR 201 is closed for avalanche control.

UDOT is reporting more crashes on Utah roads: Southbound I-15 at 2300 North in Sunset, eastbound SR 201 ramp to southbound I-215 West in Salt Lake City, westbound I-84 at the mouth of Weber Canyon, US 189 at 2400 South in Heber, and northbound 2000 West at Highway 193 in Syracuse.
8:30 a.m.
In Layton, crash on southbound US 89 at mile post 400 is causing major problems. UDOT is reporting delays of more than 15 minutes. Authorities are estimated the scene will be clear at approximately 9 a.m.
8:15 a.m.
TRAX riders should expect delays of between 20 – 25 minutes on the southbound Red Line from Ballpark to Daybreak, UTA reports: “Trains are still working to get back on schedule following a car being stuck on the Red Line rails.

Crashes reported in Sanpete, Utah, Juab, Weber, Salt Lake, Millard, Box Elder, Davis, and Sevier counties. Many of them are causing extreme traffic problems. Traffic on US-89 is at a near standstill. KSL news specialist Ladd Egan reports that traffic is backed up on southbound I-15 in North Salt Lake near Warm Springs Road as police respond to a crash.

There have been nearly a dozen crashes reported since the last update. The Utah Highway Patrol reports troopers have responded to at least 72 crashes so far.
Troopers have investigated 72 crashes so far this morning. Again, if you can delay travel and/or telecommute please do so. Expect to encounter ice on our bridges and overpasses-please adjust your speed accordingly.

UDOT is reporting crashes on southbound I-15 at the 900 south onramp in Salt Lake City, northbound Bangerter Highway at 11400 South in Daybreak, southbound I-15 at 1000 North in Salt Lake County, eastbound I-80 at mile post 134 in Emigration Canyon in Salt Lake County, and northbound I-15 at 24th St. in Weber County.
7:15 a.m.
UTA is reporting significant delays on Frontrunner. Due to a car stuck on the TRAX Red Line rails at 1300 East, commuters should expect 15-20 minute delays southbound from Stadium to Murray and all points in between.

UDOT is reporting a crash on northbound Bangerter Highway at the 7200 South offramp in West Jordan and a stalled vehicle on northbound I-215 at the 3900 South offramp in Millcreek.
The Utah Highway Patrol is reporting icy roads in northern Utah County and Davis County: “We are on the scene of numerous crashes in Salt Lake, Davis and on the Tech Corridor of I-15. Slow down, increase following distance, and watch out for first responders.”
6:40 a.m.
The Utah Highway Patrol tweeted that drivers should delay their commute or telecommute today if they can: “This storm is impacting Salt Lake County’s roads worse than expected. It’s cold and the roadways are snow-packed and iced up. If you’re out driving, please bring your speed to a crawl and give room to 1st responders.”

UDOT spokesman John Gleason said officials are asking drivers to delay travel this morning if they can. He said the plows are encountering multiple slide-offs.
Crashes have been reported on northbound I-15 at US-6 in Spanish Fork, southbound I-15 at 2000 North in Lehi, southbound I-15 at Main Street in Lehi, and northbound I-15 at Main Street in Lehi.
6:30 a.m.
Multiple crashes are being reported. The latest are on southbound I-15 at 31st St. in Ogden, northbound I-15 at mile Post 267 in Utah County, eastbound I-80 at State Street in South Salt Lake, westbound I-80 at Wright Brothers Drive in Salt Lake City, westbound I-80 at 40th West in Salt Lake City, eastbound SR 201 at 1900 West in Salt Lake City.

UTA is reporting 10- to 15-minute delays on southbound TRAX from 4800 South to Daybreak and 20- to 25-minute delays on northbound FrontRunner from Murray to Clearfield and southbound FrontRunner from Murray to American Fork and all points in between.
KSL news specialist Felicia Martinez is reporting from Mobile 5 in Utah County that lanes are not easily discernible due to snow covering the lines. Drivers should drive cautiously on the roads that haven’t been plowed yet.

UDOT reports four additional crashes: Eastbound SR 201 at 3200 West in West Valley City, southbound Bangerter Highway at 700 South in Salt Lake City, southbound I-15 at 600 North in Orem and southbound US 89 at mile post 400 in Layton.
KSL meteorologist Grant Weyman says northern Utahns can expect between 1 – 12 inches of snow by Noon Thursday, depending on their location:

5:45 a.m.
UDOT has closed SR-210 in Little Cottonwood Canyon for avalanche maintenance. Alta Hellgate residents are placed on interlodge due to avalanche danger. The interlodge order is expected to be lifted at approximately 8 a.m.
UTA has placed several bus routes on snowrouting, and the TRAX southbound Red Line from Central Pointe to 2700 West is running on a 10- to 15-minute delay. Officials are encouraging riders to dress for the weather and allow extra time for their commute this morning.

UDOT is reporting at least 10 crashes along the Wasatch Front, most of which are on I-15. Drivers are urged to leave early and drive slowly.

KSL traffic specialist Haley Smith said drivers should give themselves double the amount of their usual commute, especially for people with longer drives.
KSL meteorologist Grant Weyman says the temperatures will continue to warm throughout the day, so this morning’s rain will begin to mix with rain into the evening. He said valley areas should see an accumulation of snow between 1 – 3 inches by noon.
