TAYLORSVILLE, Utah — A family from Taylorsville is shaken but safe after a basement fire ripped through their house overnight.
Neighbors said there was an ongoing celebration and family gathering happening at the home, but something went wrong in the middle of the night.
One neighbor said he woke up to someone pounding on his door, asking for help.
Early Saturday morning, Unified firefighters got a call that 15 family members were caught in a house fire at Royalwood drive near 3400 West in Taylorsville.
“When we arrived on scene, there was smoke showing out of the eves and many people trying to extricate out of the home,” said Ryan Love with Unified Fire Authority.
Fire officials said it was a basement fire.
Six adults and nine children, including babies who were carried out, escaped the flames.
“That could have been a very detrimental fire given the amount of people who were in that home,” Love said.
Two people were transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation.
About 40 firefighters from 10 different units responded to put out the blaze.
“It is taking a toll on our crews due to the constant temperature,” he said. “It’s extremely hot outside.”
With the mid-July heat, officials said they are assigning a few more crews to each fire in hopes of stretching out the recovery time for firefighters before they can go into another burning structure/land fire.
The fire appears to be accidental. The exact cause is still under investigation.
