SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah – Two deputies with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office are being credited with helping save a West Jordan woman’s life after she was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash near Saratoga Springs on Sunday.
UCSO Sgt. Spencer Cannon said deputies Tony Sorensen and Amber Steele responded to the crash, which happened a few miles south of Saratoga Springs just after 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
State troopers were initially dispatched to the site on state Route 68, but deputies heard the call and were able to respond within a minute.
Cannon said the woman was driving southbound when she failed to negotiate a curve, crossed the northbound lane and struck a guardrail.
“Her left arm was almost completely severed above the elbow and she was bleeding severely,” Cannon said. “Her husband had used a belt as a tourniquet but it did not stop the bleeding.”

Sorenson applied a tourniquet, which is part of a deputy’s issued equipment, while Steele called for a medical helicopter. Cannon said paramedics from the Saratoga Springs Fire Department arrived in 12 minutes while the medical helicopter arrived four minutes after that.
“Given the location, both response times are remarkable,” Cannon said. “Paramedics told deputies that without the tourniquet applied by Deputy Sorensen, the woman would likely not have survived.”
The woman remained hospitalized as of Thursday but officials said she is expected to recover.
