Avalanche Warning Issued For Northern Utah Mountains

New snow has brought a high avalanche risk to Utah mountains.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Officials with the Utah Avalanche Center have issued an avalanche warning for the mountains of northern Utah, which lasts through 6 a.m. Sunday.

Recent snow has raised the avalanche danger to high in the Logan, Ogden, Salt Lake City and Provo area mountains, along with the western Uinta Mountains.

“Recent heavy snow has overloaded a very weak snowpack and has created widespread areas of unstable snow,” the warning said. “Both human triggered and natural avalanches are likely. Stay off and out of under slopes steeper than 30 degrees.”

“Slab avalanches 1 to 3 feet deep hundreds of feet wide are likely. These are unsurvivable avalanche conditions,” officials added.
