OGDEN, Utah – Officers shot and killed a suspected robbery, sexual assault and vehicle theft suspect in Weber County after they said he produced a firearm while they were in pursuit.
Officials from the Ogden Police Department said they received a report of the robbery and sexual assault just after 7 p.m. Friday.
The victim told police the male suspect displayed a handgun during the assault, and took her vehicle.
Around 11:30 p.m., an officer saw the stolen vehicle near 30th Street and Washington Boulevard and approached the vehicle.
The officer said the suspect fled the scene on foot, and into the backyard of a home on the 2900 block of Grant Avenue.
Officers pursued on foot. As they searched the backyard, officials said the man “stood up” from the back of a pickup and brandished a firearm.
Two officers fired their service weapons, fatal striking the suspect.
At a briefing Sunday morning, Ogden officials said officers immediately called for emergency technicians; however, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The officers were unharmed. They were both wearing and had activated their body cameras. The video was sent to the Weber County Attorney’s Office for analysis in their investigation.
Investigators did not have the identity of the man, and believed he may have been from out of state.
Both officers were placed on standard paid administrative leave, pending the results of the investigation.
