JUAB COUNTY, Utah – A man is in police custody after he allegedly stole a deputy’s patrol car and shot a passerby with the deputy’s rifle.
A number of agencies responded to the area of milepost 200 on northbound Interstate 15, which is just south of Nephi, near Yuba Lake.
Just before 5 p.m. Wednesday, I-15 was shut down as police searched for the suspect who has not been identified. The suspect stole a deputy’s truck, which had a police K-9 inside, before deputies exchanged fire with the suspect, who fled on foot.

Around 7 p.m. the Millard County Sheriff’s Office released a photo of the suspect, warning he could be armed and dangerous.
The Utah Highway Patrol said the suspect was taken into custody after he found in a river, where troopers believe he was trying to hide.
UHP reports the suspect has an extensive criminal history and is known to both state and local law enforcement agencies.
The passerby had non-life-threatening injuries and the K-9 was not injured. Two UHP troopers are now on administrative leave. Both directions of I-15 reopened Wednesday night.
