SYRACUSE, Utah — A groundbreaking ceremony was held in Davis County for the Syracuse Utah Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Due to the pandemic, attendance at the Saturday morning event was by invitation only, but those who live within the temple district boundaries were able to watch a broadcast.

Elder Kevin R. Duncan of the Quorum of the Seventy presided at the ceremony and offered the dedicatory prayer. Elder Dean M. Davies of the Quorum of the Seventy was also in attendance.

Church President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to build the Syracuse Utah Temple in the April 2020 General Conference.

Officials said the three-story temple will be constructed on a 12-acre site at the intersection of 2500 West and 1025 South in Syracuse, about 30 miles northwest of Salt Lake City.

The building was estimated at approximately 89,000 square feet.

It will be the 27th temple in the state of Utah.

Additional temples which have been announced or are under construction are located in Ephraim, Layton, Lindon, Orem, St. George (Red Cliffs), Saratoga Springs, Smithfield, Taylorsville and Tooele (Deseret Peak).

Other temple sites in use or under renovation include Bountiful, Brigham City, Cedar City, Draper, Jordan River, Logan, Manti, Monticello, Mount Timpanogos, Ogden, Oquirrh Mountain, Payson, Provo City Center, Provo, Salt Lake, Saratoga Springs, and St. George.
