Moab man killed in Grand County wingsuit jump

Castle Valley, Utah – A 55-year-old man died after jumping from a cliff wearing a wingsuit near Rocky Rapid on Friday.
The Grand County Sheriff’s Department reported the death. They did not release the man’s name as of Saturday.
The victim’s satellite messaging device reported an impact and sent an automatic SOS message. A news release said the victim’s partner also activated an inReach device from the top of the cliff.
A medical helicopter was dispatched and found the man’s body about 1,000 feet below the cliff on a steep slope.
The chopper dropped off a pair of first responders who hiked to the body and confirmed the man was dead.
The Grand County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue sent a boat and rescue gear to meet with EMS crews at the Rocky Rapid boat ramp to help evacuate the man’s body.
A Department of Public Safety helicopter hoisted the man’s body and the first responders back into the chopper the dropped them off at the boat ramp.
The whole operation took several hours to complete.
Deputies did not say if the wingsuit failed or give any other reason for the man’s death.
