TOOELE, Utah — Authorities say a 49-year-old man was shot by police after he fired shots at officers during a domestic violence incident in Tooele County.

Lt. Jeremy Hansen with the Tooele City Police Department said officers were dispatched to the domestic violence call at a home near 900 West and 600 South Wednesday around 4 a.m.

A woman called police saying her husband was getting physically violent with her, something that dispatchers picked up on when they heard her screams for help over the phone.

Hansen said officers arrived on scene and found the man, who was armed and intoxicated.

“When they arrived, there was a confrontation in the garage with the husband,” Hansen said. “During the course of that confrontation, the suspect fired one round and our officers returned fire with two rounds, striking the suspect.”

The man was taken to a Salt Lake Valley hospital in critical condition.

Police said all involved officers were OK.

As for the victim, advocates are making sure she’s going to be OK, along with her 17-year-old son, who witnessed the violence.

The officers involved are now on routine administrative leave.

Tooele does not have a critical incident response team and a group of investigators from the State Bureau of Investigation will look into the case.
