A man is in police custody after a domestic incident with his family and fleeing from police across Weber County on the night of April 21st, according to arresting documents.
According to the probable cause statement, Roy police were called in for a fight between 36-year-old Steven Moelter and his wife at their residence in Roy, Utah.
During the fight, Moelter brandished a handgun and started to talk about committing suicide, the wife told police.
She also alleges that he pushed his 14-year-old child down the stairs three times during this incident inflecting multiple bruises on them.
The wife said that Moelter left the scene in his truck with the handgun before police arrived.
But he returned in his truck when police were still there, according to the statement.
Police attempted to pull Moelter over, but he fled from them, causing police to give chase.
During the chase, an officer had Moelter at gunpoint and commanded him to stop, but he drove around the officer and their marked vehicle, police said.
Police continued to chase Moelter in the Roy, West Haven, and Ogden areas until he went on I-15, where police stopped their pursuit due to Moelter’s high speeds and driving recklessly around 24th Street in Ogden.
Utah Highway Patrol found Moelter later on and attempted to pull him over.
He pulled over and was arrested without further incident.
Police found a large combat knife, a glass pipe, and marijuana in Moelter’s truck. The probable cause statement didn’t mention finding the handgun.
It was later found out that Moelter is restricted from owning a firearm or any dangerous weapons, according to police.
Moelter was booked for:
- Threat/Use of Dangerous Weapon in Fight
- Fail to Stop or Respond at Command of Police
- Child Abuse Involving Physical Injury
- Possession of Controlled Substance
- Use or Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
- Reckless Driving
- Purchase, Transaction, Possession, Use of a Firearm by Restricted Person
- Unlawful Possession, Purchase, Transaction, of a Dangerous Weapon
