SALT LAKE CITY — After nearly two years of construction, the central tunnel at the Salt Lake City International Airport is halfway done.
It may still look like a lot of construction is left, but project leaders say big progress has been made.
A year ago, the airport’s executive director said what has taken shape as a tunnel started out as just a mud hole.

Come October 2024, the 1,175-foot-long tunnel will be complete, making the journey from security and Concourse A to Concourse B a lot smoother and more enjoyable.
The idea behind the tunnel is to make it an immersive experience.
Artist Gordon Huether designed the “River Tunnel,” which will ideally make passengers feel like they’re walking on the floor of a river.
“You’re looking for your gate you realize you gotta go through the pedestrian tunnel. The river tunnel. The central tunnel,” Huether said.

The tunnel will be a straight shot where passengers can move from Concourse A to Concourse B. Six moving walkways will be installed in the tunnel to help with passenger flow.
As for baggage, it’ll only take a bag 10 minutes to remove from Concourse B to the baggage carousel.
The whole project cost rings in at $4.5 billion.
Fast forward several years, trains on either side of the tunnel will take passengers between the concourses.
