Severe thunderstorm, flash flood warnings issued for southern Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Kane County along U.S. Highway 89 Monday morning, while a flash flood warning was in effect for Zion National Park to Rockville.

8:15 a.m.

UPDATE: The flash flood warning for Zion National Park and surrounding areas has been extended through 10:30 a.m.

7:05 a.m.

“Heavy rain is falling across portions of Washington County, particularly near La Verkin, heading toward Virgin. This will cause urban and small stream flooding,” meteorologists said.

A second severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Kane County — this one including Kanab and parts of U.S. 89.

It lasts through 7:30 a.m. The storm could produce winds up to 60 mph with heavy rain and half-dollar-sized hail.

6:54 a.m.

A special weather statement has been issued for parts of Washington and Kane counties as storms head toward Zion National Park, where a flash flood warning is in effect through 8:30 a.m.

These storms are capable of producing hail and heavy rain, along with winds up to 50 mph.

6:45 a.m.

The National Weather Service said the thunderstorm passing over Kane County was capable of quarter-size hail and torrential rain.

That warning expires at 7 a.m.

The flash flood warning for Zion National Park lasts through 8:30 a.m. Monday.
