Woods Cross residents demand city fix damage after sewage floods 20 homes

Apr 2, 2018, 10:57 PM | Updated: 11:12 pm

WOODS CROSS – A water main break, near 2250 South and 1450 West, left 20 homes with sewage back up in their basements on February 27. A month later they are still stuck with the bill, even after they say city officials said they would pay for it.

During a previous interview with KSL the day the incident happened, Woods Cross City Administrator Gary Uresk explained, “It went undetected for a number of hours. Some of them had minor damage. Some of them the entire basement flooded.”

Uresk also told KSL, the “City’s insurance company is taking a close look at the damage”, both in the homes, and the pipes underground. Whether the breaks could have been avoided, and what caused them will all factor into how much the city covers and how much the insurance company pays for.

However, residents like Rhett Cleverly say they were promised the damage would be “taken care of,” now, he says the city isn’t keeping that promise.

“I just want my home back so I can live in it again,” Cleverly said.

Residents are now planning to attend the Woods Cross City council meeting Tuesday, March 3, to voice their concerns. They say they are ready to file a lawsuit if they don’t get their damage paid for.

When KSL reached out to city officials, we were told, “I have been advised by the city attorney not to discuss this matter due to potential pending litigation,” Uresk said.

Homeowners estimate anywhere from $5,000 to $50,000 in damage to each individual family home.

KSL will continue to follow the developments.
