UTA Bus, Concrete Truck Struck By Bullets While On Highway 89 In Fruit Heights

Aug 27, 2018, 2:15 PM | Updated: 9:35 pm

FRUIT HEIGHTS, Utah – Two vehicles, including a UTA bus with passengers on board, were struck by bullets on Highway 89 in Fruit Heights Monday morning.

Davis County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Ty Berger said two shots hit a concrete tanker and another shot hit a UTA bus window just a seat in front of one of the nine people on board.

Both were heading south on HWY 89 when this happened around 5:15 a.m.

Investigators are looking into who did this, but Berger said he does not believe the public is in any danger.

“It’s still problematic to us to have somebody firing off weapons in a densely populated areas,” said Berger.

Police are looking for evidence in the orchard between Highway 89 and Mountain Road.

“We were sound asleep this morning around 5 a.m. and we heard a pop pop pop,” said resident DeeEll Fifield. “We heard about six. It woke us up and my wife rolled over and said, ‘What was that?’ You know you think it’s fireworks.”

About 10 minutes later he and his wife, who have lived in Fruit Heights for more than three decades, heard more of something they’ve never heard here before.

“Pop pop pop. Three shots and then a break and then another pop pop pop three shots,” Fifield said. “I’m a hunter. To me, it was pretty obviously a pistol.”

Manning Orchards’ peach picking was delayed Monday morning because of the investigation, but its popularity still remained despite the police presence. Lots of folks continued to stop by their stand even as police cruisers lined the street.

Locals seemed to continue with their daily routines.

“No this is a very safe neighborhood,” said Fifield.

While searching the area, sheriff’s deputies arrested a man who they said was causing a disruption.

“He will be booked for public intoxication and disorderly conduct,” Berger said, adding that the man lives in a basement apartment next to the fruit orchard and is being considered a “person of interest” in the shots fired investigation.

“The occupant of the home did interject himself into our investigation and right now he’s being interviewed here at the sheriff’s office,” Berger said.

After the arrest, the sheriff’s office served a warrant at the residence that allowed deputies to search the home, fruit orchards and other buildings on the property.

As of late Monday, no shell casings or weapon had been found, although ammunitions of several different calibers had been taken into evidence, according to Berger.

Berger said it doesn’t look like the bus or truck were shot at intentionally because the highway is not visible from the orchard where it’s believed the shots were fired.
