Two Teens Hit in Crosswalk in West Jordan

WEST JORDAN, Utah – A West Jordan teenager is recovering in the hospital after she and her brother were hit by a car on their way to school.
Three siblings were in the crosswalk on 2700 West near 7500 South around 7 a.m. Tuesday when a car struck two of them, according to Officer Scott List with West Jordan Police.
A male teenager was hit in the leg and foot while his sister was hit head on, List said. The third sibling was not hit by the car.
The girl was taken to Riverton Hospital where her father said she was being treated for a broken foot, a broken knee and hairline fractures to her pelvis. Nathon Boyle said the impact sent his daughter tumbling over the hood of the car.
Boyle said his three children told him the approaching car appeared to be stopping.
“They said that he slowed down to acknowledge that he saw them and then he continued to go,” Boyle said. “I’m lucky that my kids did not go underneath the vehicle and that there wasn’t more substantial injuries.”
Boyle is calling on the city to update the crosswalk signs to make the crosswalk more visible. He also wants drivers to be more aware.
“People need to slow down and be cognizant of pedestrians on the road,” Boyle said.
The driver told investigators that he didn’t see the teenagers crossing the road until it was too late, List said, adding that the auto-pedestrian accident appears to be an issue of visibility—not a situation of distracted driving.
List also said that a Good Samaritan jumped out of her car to help but forgot to put her car in park. Her vehicle then traveled forward and collided with and caused minor damage to the car that struck the teens.
