Suspect Shot By Ogden Police After Aggravated Kidnapping

Nov 30, 2018, 8:54 PM | Updated: 10:51 pm

OGDEN, Utah – Officers with the Ogden Police Department have thwarted an aggravated kidnapping attempt. Officials said their investigation led to the death of the suspect.

Chief Randy Watt said a woman flagged down an officer around 6:10 p.m. Friday at the block of Washington Boulevard and said she had been kidnapped.

The woman provided a description of the suspect who she said was also in the nearby area.

“As officers responded to the information she put out, and came into the area, as soon as they were visible the suspect pulled a pistol and opened fire on the officers,” said Chief Watt.

The suspect reportedly struck the officers’ vehicle several times, but did not injure the officers.

Chief Watt said two officers returned fire, killing the male suspect.

The man was not identified, but officials said he was a felon in his late 20s or early 30s.

It was not clear how the woman escaped her alleged kidnapper.

The aggravated kidnapping reportedly occurred outside of the city, and the two somehow came in to the downtown area.

“We were fortunate that there was almost no body in that area at that time,” said Chief Watt.

The police chief said it was fortunate the woman and officers were not injured.

“I would like to point out and first congratulate the police officers who were placed in great danger and removed an armed felon in the act of committing an aggravated felony in the streets. And we’re very proud of the officers and what they did, the actions that they took – unfortunate actions but very necessary actions. And we’re also very grateful that the woman was able to escape from the individual, and she is safe and well and is being interviewed by the police,” Chief Watt said.

The woman was being interviewed by police, as they worked to determine exactly what happened.

Officials expected to release additional details Saturday afternoon.
