SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – “Bird Box,” starring Sandra Bullock and Trevante Rhodes, is now streaming on Netflix.
It’s a post-apocalyptic story about a mother and her two children trying to stay safe after an ominous force drives most people to commit suicide. In order to stay alive, they have to wear blindfolds.
Film critic Jimmy Martin chatted with the cast and director of the movie.
“It was pretty daunting,” said director Susanne Bier about directing a film where all the actors are blindfolded. “We made sure it wasn’t dangerous, but it was scary.”
Bullock said they weren’t able to see anything through the blindfolds.
“You want to trip,” she said about walking around with her vision impaired. “We had a great steady-cam operator whose job it was to follow us at all times. … “If we fell, it was OK. If you tripped, if you ran into something, it was OK. You didn’t want to have us have a clean path because that wouldn’t make sense.”
Martin said the film makes you want to close your eyes, which is a good thing.
“I absolutely loved it,” he said. “It’s streaming, so you can watch it at home. Turn the lights off.”
“If you don’t want to do the holiday season,” he added, “I think you should watch ‘Bird Box.'”
