Jimmy Martin Chats With Stars, Directors Of ‘Welcome To Marwen,’ ‘Bird Box’

Dec 24, 2018, 4:49 PM

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – “Welcome to Marwen” didn’t draw huge box office numbers during the weekend, but film critic Jimmy Martin said it’s worth seeing.

He sat down Carell and the film’s director, Robert Zemeckis, to talk about the movie.

“I stumbled on the documentary,” Zemeckis said. “Then I obviously, from there, went to go find out who this guy was.”

“I was just fascinated by his story,” he added.

He said the lead character has an amazing imagination that worlds through the photographs he takes.

“He’s completely cognizant of the fact that this world that he’s created seems odd to some people,” Carell said. “He kind of relishes it. He sort of loves the oddity of it, and he loves the way people respond to it.”

Carell said “Welcome to Marwen” helped him learn that people can go through real hardships in the world and not be bitter or cynical.

“It’s a really cynical world we live in now,” Carell said. “To have a voice like that out there, it’s heartwarming.”

Martin said the film is charming and that Carell was perfect for the role.

‘Bird Box’

“Bird Box,” starring Sandra Bullock and Trevante Rhodes and directed by Susanne Bier, is one of the latest feature-length films to come from Netflix.

It’s a post-apocalyptic story about a mother and her two children trying to stay safe after an ominous force drives most people to commit suicide. In order to stay alive, they have to wear blindfolds.

In the film, an entity takes on the form of people’s greatest fears, so Martin asked the cast about their own worst fears.

“My children,” Bullock said. “Something happening to my kids.”

“Just the loss of a family member, for sure,” Rhodes said.

Bier said “Bird Box” may be scary, but there’s also hope in the story.

“I don’t think I would have done it otherwise,” she said.

Martin said it’s terrifying, but he loved it.
