Big Cottonwood Canyon Group Urges Drivers To Look Out For Moose

BIG COTTONWOOD CANYON, Utah — People who live in Big Cottonwood Canyon want drivers to be vigilant for moose in the road.
Barbara Cameron, chair of the Big Cottonwood Community Association, said three moose have been killed by vehicles in Big Cottonwood Canyon in the last few weeks.
She said the moose sometimes wander onto Big Cottonwood Canyon Road and are unable to climb the snowbanks on either side, leaving them stuck on the road.
“The moose come to the road because it’s one giant salt lick and they love it, but sometimes they just can’t escape,” Cameron said. “In the night, they’re really dark. They’re a dark mass and you just can’t see them in the road,”
The Brighton Institute has begun an outreach program aimed at educating the public about moose in the area. Cameron said a billboard company donated space on an electronic billboard at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon alerting drivers to potential moose in the road.
The billboard reads “Give a moose a brake and save a life”.
UDOT recently cleared some snow from the sides of the road near the Donut Falls trailhead to make room in case they need to do more plowing this winter. Cameron said the lower snowbanks would help moose get out of the road more easily.
